Water is scarce in Ibiza.

• Average rainfalls in Ibiza are falling yearly
• Water reserves are at their minimum
• Drilling for wells is prohibited because of the low water table

But plants need water

Trucking in water from desalination plants is expensive. Desalination plants use a phenomenal amount of energy and so it´s an environmentally unfriendly way of watering your garden.

One simple solution is to build a balsa and collect the rain which falls on your land.

Collecting rainwater in balsas or recycling house wastewater through, for instance, a reedbed is:

• Ecological
• Much less expensive in the long run

Common irrigation systems in use on the island at present include:

• The humble watering can
• Hosepipe's
• Sprinklers
• Drip systems
• Underground watering

Hosepipe's and sprinklers are extremely water consuming. Drip systems and underground watering use comparatively little water and are less expensive in the longer term.

On balance, Terravita Gardens believes that combining an underground or drip system with reedbeds, where waste water is recycled, provides the best solution to Ibiza's water problem.

However, the best irrigation system is to plant the right plant in the right place.
